A: He won the award again.
A: 그가 또 상 받았대.
B: Isn’t that something?
B: 와, 대단하다.
A: They bought a house in a month.
A: 걔네 한 달 만에 집 샀대.
B: Isn’t that something?
B: 와, 대단하다.
A: They met again after 20 years.
A: 걔네 20년 만에 다시 만났대.
B: Isn’t that something?
B: 와, 신기하다. ③ mean = 못되다 / 심술궂다
A: Why is he so mean?
A: 쟤 왜 이렇게 못됐어?
B: He’s always been like that.
B: 원래 저래.
A: Don’t be mean to her.
A: 걔한테 못되게 굴지 마.
B: Okay, I’ll be nicer.
B: 알겠어, 더 잘할게.⑤ mean = 평균 (수학적 의미)
A: What’s the mean score?
A: 평균 점수가 뭐야?
B: It’s about 85.
B: 약 85점이야.
A: The mean is higher this year.
A: 올해 평균이 더 높아.
B: Yeah, students did better.

8. by all means (물론이지 / 꼭 그렇게 해)
A: Can I borrow your pen?
A: 네 펜 좀 빌려도 돼?
B: By all means.
B: 물론이지.
A: Should I call her now?
A: 지금 전화할까?
B: By all means, go ahead.
B: 당연하지, 해.
9. mean to ~ (~할 의도이다)
A: Do you mean to quit your job?
A: 너 직장 그만둘 생각이야?
B: Yes, I’ve been thinking about it.
B: 응, 계속 고민 중이야.
A: I didn’t mean to interrupt.
A: 방해할 의도는 아니었어.
B: It’s okay.
B: 괜찮아.
10. mean ~ing (~하는 것을 의미하다)
A: This sign means stopping here.
A: 이 표지판은 여기서 멈추라는 뜻이야.
B: Oh, I didn’t know that.
B: 아, 몰랐어.
A: Being late means losing points.
A: 지각하면 점수 깎인다는 뜻이야.
B: I’ll be on time then.
B: 그럼 시간 맞출게.
11. means (수단 / 방법)
A: We need a means to solve this.
A: 이걸 해결할 방법이 필요해.
B: Let’s think of something.
B: 방법을 찾아보자.
A: He has the means to travel.
A: 그는 여행할 경제적 여유가 있어.
B: Lucky him.
B: 부럽네.
12. by means of (~을 통해 / ~으로)
A: They solved it by means of technology.
A: 그들은 기술을 통해 그걸 해결했어.
B: That’s impressive.
B: 대단하다.
A: We communicated by means of email.
A: 우리는 이메일로 소통했어.
B: That makes sense.
B: 그럴 만하네.
